Vinyl sales, however, increased by more than 50%, no doubt thanks in part to for the ongoing retro/vintage trend, Record Store Day, Urban Outfitters and... we're betting the pale nostalgia of Wes Anderson also had something to do with it.
The trend may seem like a harsh reality (Taylor Swift being just one of many artists who have spoken out against the medium) but for most upcoming artists there is already much more acceptance of the present industry.
For most, earnings are not in album sales, but in regular touring and creative merchandise. Sites like Bandcamp too, often invite a "pay what you want" option for consumers, to which as a customer, you'll often find you're a more generous person than you think you are. This being true, Spotify's artist payment of 0.4 cents per song does seem unfair.
