If you haven't been keeping up with the world of Power Rangers since you were nought but a lil' tyke watching Mighty Morphin'... on a Saturday morning, you may not know that since then, the series has had a few... updates.

And while the franchise is getting yet another reboot with the Lionsgate-funded movie coming (apparently) next year, a music video director decided to swoop in there first.

Joseph Kahn brings us POWER/RANGERS, a 14-min hyper-gritty dystopian reimagining of our favourite characters from the original Mighty Morphin' series. And he is not even within the realm of f**king around with this story.

Kimberley, Tommy, and the team are all grown up. Half of them are dead; the others have PTSD, and are now living either in hiding, or in the employ of the victorious Machine Empire. Rangers are soldiers-for-hire, Bulk and Skull are meth-head mercenaries, and the situation is bleaker than that which any gritty Hollywood reboot has ever promised you.

Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff stands in for the role of Kimberley, while we've got Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek as the rogue ex-Red Ranger Rocky. It's tense, it's profane, and it's a sign that the production team behind this PG-13 movie coming out next year really need to step up their game.

It's a tragedy that this thing is only 14mins, but it's definitely worth the watch; if only for the major nostalgia-kicking plot twist.
