I think we can all agree that school starts way too early. Students who typically start class at 7 am deal with ungodly wake-up times, sleep deprivation, and stress. Well, now science finally backs up the theory that starting school at 7 is way too freaking early for teenagers.
A new study in Pediatrics found that the quality of sleep teens get is less about how much and more about when.
The study found that, for adults, the optimum time to be fast asleep was 3 am.
For teens? It was more like 7:30 am. This means that, a 7 am school start makes no sense for teenagers because they should technically be fast asleep at that time in order to perform at their highest capabilities later in the day.
Dr. Judith Owens, director of sleep medicine at Boston University, put it like this. "It’s like requiring an adult to get up five days a week at 3 a.m. — that’s their circadian trough — for adolescents to be expected to get up and function at a time when their circadian-driven alertness is at its lowest point in 24 hours."

All those years wasted sitting in first-period Spanish class at 7:20 am when I should have been ASLEEP!!!!
Well, even though we have this information, it's doubtful that it will inspire widespread change.
For adults, high schools are one part educational institution, and two parts day care. As a person who has attended university with earliest start times of 9 am, I can attest to the fact that getting up later can be amazing for productivity.
