Ever wondered into a record shop and browsed through the "Females Of All Description" section? Probably not, because that's just weird and sexist.
That hasn't stopped one record store having section with that title because, y'know, 'women' is it's own genre of music and all other genres are male, right? *face palm*
The section was spotted by British artist Kate Nash who took to Twitter to call out the sexist bullshit.
This kinda shit drives me insane. The genre 'females of all description' is not a music genre. It's sexist pic.twitter.com/3u0FGCQIbM— Kate Nash (@katenash) August 29, 2016
There would never be a "males of all description" section. Because the rest of the shop and all other music genres are considered male— Kate Nash (@katenash) August 29, 2016
It's a reminder to me that most ppl don't even know they are sexist. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Female is not a genre— Kate Nash (@katenash) August 29, 2016
Don't categorize my sex #femalesofalldescription— Kate Nash (@katenash) August 29, 2016
Other people in the comments were pretty outraged too.
@katenash Hope you asked where the 'Males of all descriptions' records were.— Breaking More Waves (@BMWavesBlog) August 30, 2016
@katenash what really bugs me about this is that they can't even fill up an entire box with fucking female artists of ALL genres.— slim pug™ (@verychillgal) August 29, 2016
@katenash it blows my mind that not only it happens but that people try to find ways to justify it.— luke (@pansynerd) August 29, 2016
Seriously, it's not that f*cking hard, is it? 'Women' is not a genre. Just put records in the correct genre section and stop lessering the work of female artists by considering it separate to men. *SHAKES FIST*
Kinda reminds us the "gay music section" that Olly Alexander spotted a couple of months back. When will these people learn...
