Anyone familiar with Melanie Martinez' work will know that she's a bit of a control freak when it comes to her creative projects.
She's spoken many times about her love for making videos, to the point where she has given herself the unenviable task of making a video for every song on her debut album Cry Baby (except the bonus tracks, because her label wouldn't pay for it). She has been credited as the director for most of these videos, including 'Soap', 'Training Wheels' and 'Cry Baby'.
But despite her obvious love for video work and the strong aesthetic that she has created through all the videos, that's still not enough for some people to believe that's she actually makes the videos herself.
Yesterday (Oct 13), Melanie made a rare appearance on Twitter to let fans know she was back in LA working on her next video. Unfortunately, one 'fan' decided to accuse Melanie of lying, namely not making her own videos.
back home in LA, writing music and editing videos while getting over this cold i have. Also v excited for the LA show the 20th pic.twitter.com/02SxaSV7xf— melanie martinez (@MelanieLBBH) October 12, 2016
@MelanieLBBH you're not editing videos, your employees are— adru (@thebluefroot) October 13, 2016
Melanie wasn't taking that shit lying down though, as she shot back immediately to correct the fan and defend her creative control and authorship, from the writing the video scripts all the way down to the styling.
@thebluefroot nope I am actually, with my good friend tony corella. I also write, direct, do my makeup and styling for videos aswell .— melanie martinez (@MelanieLBBH) October 13, 2016
This is not the first time a female artist has had to correct people mis-crediting their work. Solange, M.I.A and Björk have all made headlines in the past by calling out the press, fans and collaborators crediting other people for work they've written/directed/produced etc. It is almost always men that their work gets attributed to.
Well done to Melanie for setting the record straight. Hopefully people will think twice next time!
