Every year it's the same. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T LIKE CHRISTMAS SONGS?!?". This is literally *everyone's* reaction when I confess my cardinal sin of disliking Xmas songs.

And no, it's not that I'm a miserable b*stard. It's simply because 99% of all Christmas songs are objectively awful.

Thankfully, not long ago I discovered a treasure trove of old RnB, Soul and Funk Xmas songs from the 60s and 70s which are nothing like the usual cheap, lurid dross that plague radio and TV at this time of year. I'm gonna share just 10 of my favourites with you but there are literally hundreds of these songs out there. In fact, there's probably enough to cover the rest of December if you really want to avoid Mariah Carey this season.

1) Big Dee Irwin & Little Eva - "I Wish You A Very Merry Christmas"

2) Louis Armstrong - "Zat You, Santa Claus"

3) Ray Charles - "Merry Christmas Baby"

4) Clarence Carter - "Back Door Santa"

5) Akin & Teddy Van - "Santa Claus Is A Black Man"

6) James Brown - "Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto"

7) Rita Faye Wilson - "Sleighbells, Reindeer and Snow"

8) Albert King - "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin"

9) Blind Blake - "Lonesome Christmas Blues"

10) The Emotions - "What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas?"
