Madonna Rebel Heart

You guys. I think it's time we finally had that talk about Madonna.

Madge has had a pretty decent run. She's had majorly iconic pop moments and trailblazed for tons of young female artists. However iconic she once was, we're not entirely sure that excuses her totally weird and borderline offensive social media etiquette.

Madonna has always been an embarrassing auntie on social media. We've known she was there but we haven't actively sought her out (for obvious reasons). However, since the lackluster return on the push of her newest full length effort, Rebel Heart, Madge has been clanging pots and pans so loudly that it's become impossible to ignore her.

Since December, Madonna has been publically decrying the distribution of her "stolen" and "unfinished" work.

Obviously there is a person, or a group of people behind this that were essentially terrorising me. I don't want to sound alarming, but certainly that's how I felt. It's one thing if someone comes into your house and steals a painting off your wall: that's also a violation, but, your work, as an artist, that's devastating... I'm sorry if words alarm people, but that's what it felt like. It was not a consensual agreement. I did not say 'hey, here's my music, and it's finished.' It was theft.

Then she began inexplicably sharing images of various tied of people who she called Rebel Hearts. Many of them deceased.

Her social media style is clumsy and oddly unregulated. It's widely know that many celebrities, including the likes of Britney Spears, are completely uninvolved in their social media profiles.

Nameless, faceless publicists schedule tweets and manage fan interactions to ensure things never get a chance to go sideways. Yet, with Madonna, you have the opposite case.

She is entirely too involved in her own social media presence and it's rubbing people the wrong way.

Madonna's behaviour is oddly telling.

At 56 years of age, she has watched her influence steadily decline for the last 15 or so years.

Rebel Heart will be her 13th album and it's basically a vehicle for people to decide whether they're still interested in the 80s pop star.

Album sales haven't been phenomenal and critical reception has been tepid. There's a decent chance that Madonna is just scared about where her career is headed and social media is her only avenue to air these fears.

Hollywood and the music industry notoriously values youth and sex appeal, so it's only natural that, when faced with some disappointing sales figures and the task of redefining yourself in a new era, things would get a bit weird in Madge-land.

Who is to say it won't be like this in the future when our robot overlords create a holographic social media sphere and things with 60 year old Beyoncé get kind of bizzaro as well.
