Richard Sherman Super Bowl 2015

Apparently there was a sports thing last night.

The 49th Super Bowl saw a narrow victory for the New England Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks, and you don't come to PopBuzz for sports news.

PLENTY of other stuff happened. Katy Perry, Idina Menzel and plenty of commercial events took place for the entire internet to laugh, cry and make more memes than you could shake a sports ball at.

For your consideration, here are five of our favourites from the night. STRAP IN.

1) The return of "Adele Dazeem"

Musical queen Idina Menzel took to the stage at the opening to belt out her gorgeous rendition of the national anthem.

But it seems as though people aren't ready to forget her alter-ego Adele Dazeem, bafflingly coined by John Travolta at last year's Oscars. "Adele Dazeem" was trending well after her appearance onstage.

Oh, Innocent, we expected better.

To make matters worse, the original culprit returned to the scene of the crime:

2) Kanye West's Miserable Fan Selfie

We thought we'd been through this: Kanye West does not smile for photographs. But that didn't stop a couple of unwitting fans trying to grab a selfie when they spotted Ye in the box next to theirs. His reaction - or lack thereof - was priceless.

And as soon as the greater internet caught on to it, it was a pretty great time.

3) The depressing Nationwide ad

Insurance company Nationwide got themselves an impressive slot during the ad breaks - and proceeded to use it to break everybody's hearts with a depressing ad with a Shyamalanesque twist about a young boy, lamenting from beyond the grave about his wasted potential.

It got people right in the heart, the feels, and inevitably, the funnybone.

The obligatory crossover:

And while the usually opportunistic Twitter account for Oreo was quiet last night, someone was on hand to use the meme to backhand them perfectly:

4) Katy Perry's halftime show

There's SO much that can be said about Katy's wardrobe and stage choices, but we'll just leave it in the capable hands of the Twitterverse:

5) Richard Sherman's Reaction To Losing

Remember how some football happened during the Super Bowl? Yeah, us neither, but here's the face of Seahawks player Richard Sherman as Patriots rookie Malcolm Butler secured their 28-24 win with a crucial defensive play.

A truly devastating reaction. But did that stop the internet from treating it like a meme goldmine? Heck no.

And the crossovers just keep on coming!
