There was a fleeting moment when we had high hopes for Zayn Malik's solo career - then he fell out with producer Naughty Boy, broke up with his long-term girlfriend by text, and got in a number of public Twitter spats with other artists and celebrities.
But after a quieter month of laying low and perfecting his Grindr Instagram profile, Zayn is back to work - and is keeping some great company with his new team.
After signing with RCA, Zayn has teamed up with Frank Ocean's producer Malay to work on his first proper solo endeavour. Revealing the collaboration earlier this week, Malay described Zayn as "pure genius". Alright?
Cat's out the bag, it's no secret we've been working. @zaynmalik is pure genius. An artists' artist. A shining star with a genuine— Malay (@MalayHo) September 14, 2015
That's some seriously high praise from a two-time Grammy winner. Malay has worked on some of the most fire records from acts such as John Legend, Alicia Keyes and most recently Tori Kelly; but possibly most notably produced Channel Orange for Frank Ocean, back what feels like 50 years ago. Seriously, Frank, where the hell is this new album? We're waiting. Get back to me.
Regardless of whether or not Frank's next album ever appears, it looks like we can expect great things from Zayn, now that he's under a new contract and in what sounds like a better working relationship. Everbody had better get hyped for Channel Zayn...
