Kanye West

An open letter to Shirley Manson: Shhhhhh.

By now most will be aware of the fiasco that was Kanye West's Grammys meltdown. Just when it seemed like Kanye was getting back into people's good graces, his (admittedly) savage takedown of Beck has made him, once again, persona non grata.

Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé and at this point, we tired of it. Because what happens is when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.

Kanye West

West's assertion that Beck (an accomplished multi-instrumentalist) needs to respect artistry was lame - especially for Yeezy, who has spent a career swerving detractors that have claimed his own brand of (genius) music wasn't especially valid.

(Sidebar: Do you remember when Kanye had to have his jaw wired shut after a near fatal car accident and he still rapped Through The Wire?

That being said, Shirley Manson magnanimously taking it upon herself to pen an "open letter" to Kanye West is not only dumb - it's super dumb.

This is not a conversation that zero time Grammy award winner, Shirley Manson needs to wade into. It's not a conversation that any of us really need to wade into. Manson involving herself in such a direct way only fuels the faux indignation of all the dullards chomping at the bit to let you know how much of a disgrace they think Kanye West is.

The truth is that the Grammys are a mess. They're misguided, overhyped, and they often get it wrong. Remember when Lorde won a Grammy for best rock album? Remember when The Heist won best rap album? Remember when Beck won album of the year over Beyoncé?

Whether or not you think Kanye was wrong to do what he did, investing serious time and thought into being angry at him is painfully whack and indicative of an unfulfilled existence. Especially when Beck responded to the incident with the verbal equivalent of a shoulder shrug.

I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right? You can't please everybody, man. I still love him and think he's genius. I aspire to do what he does.

Beck

So Beck says "I love Kanye"; Kanye says "I love Beck", and Shirley Manson says "you look like a complete twat." One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn't belong.

The problem here is that when you spend so much time and effort tweeting and penning open letters to literal strangers, you forfeit the right to be taken seriously. If Kanye says there is no problem and Beck says there is no problem then why force it? Why try and fuel this fake rivalry between two men who would likely work together under better circumstances? Was Kanye wrong? Sure. Does it deserve for you to be angry enough to write a letter about it? Definitely not.

Beck is a genius. Kanye is a genius. You're just a person on the Internet with some pent up fake outrage. Give it a rest and learn to love yourself.
